The Do’s and Don’ts of Maintaining Your Backyard Waterfall

The Do’s and Don’ts of Maintaining Your Backyard Waterfall

Water features have become popular landscaping accents that add a level of elegance and tranquility to many residential and commercial properties. Waterfall elements in particular are a great way to transform anyone’s backyard into a relaxing oasis!

In order to get the most out of your backyard waterfall and keep it sparkling and fresh, you must put time and effort into regular maintenance. If you’re not sure how to approach the care of this stunning design accent, we’ve got some tips to help you get started!

DO keep an eye on the water.

Pay attention to how the water in your waterfall is flowing. Watch for irregularities—is it sputtering? Is it streaming more slowly than normal? These abnormalities could signal a need for some extra TLC or a call to the professionals. Take note of the quality of the water as well. If things start getting murky, you know your waterfall needs some attention.

DON’T let algae run rampant.

A healthy backyard waterfall is going to be pretty much algae-free. Algae can cause problems with water quality and disrupt flow by clogging or damaging your filter and pump. If your waterfall is streaming into a pond, consider adding a few floating plants to keep it healthy. You’ll also want to stick with distilled water when refilling your feature, as hose water contains chemicals that can cause algae growth.

DO service your filter.

Familiarize yourself with the proper maintenance routine for your filter and replace it as needed. This will keep the water fresh and clean, as well as prevent any buildup of dirt and debris in the pump.

DON’T forget about your pump.

The pump is the heart of your waterfall, so it’s especially important that you remove and clean it regularly. Disassemble it and clean each part individually, taking care to remove any excess debris and layers of filth that settle over time. Reassemble the pump and put it back in your feature for smooth, unhindered water flow.

DO prepare for the winter months.

When the weather starts to cool down be sure to drain your water features and stop running your backyard waterfall—you don’t want any leftover water to freeze and cause damage by expanding. Unplug the pump and store it in a heated area to keep it in good shape for next season.

DON’T neglect your wildlife.

Unruly plants and vegetation can sometimes grow in a way that covers your waterfall or disrupts the flow of the water. Make sure you’re routinely trimming the plant life surrounding your water feature to prevent this from happening. Also, if your waterfall runs into a pond, keep an eye on any fish you have, monitoring their size and health as best you can. Healthy fish indicate your water is in good condition, and that your waterfall is circulating the right amount of oxygen.
