Polymeric Sand Maintenance

Saltwater Pool Installation in Annapolis, MD

Polymeric sand is a high-tech mix of graded, colored sand and a binder, specially formulated to fill joints between pavers, slabs, or natural stones. Unlike conventional sand, it stays in place and remains stable. It softens when wet and firms up when dry to better resist soil movements. When the sand gets stiff, you can expect fewer weeds and less insect damage in the cracks of your pavers.

Polymeric sand can be kept in its original packaging, in a dry place, and away from UV rays. Bags may be stored outside if they are properly protected with an opaque and waterproof tarp.

How to Apply Polymeric Sand

To ensure you apply polymeric sand safely and correctly, you must follow a few essential steps:

1) Evaluate Weather Conditions

Before applying the polymeric sand, you must check the weather forecast to ensure that there will be no rain over the next 24 hours. For the sand to dry properly, the temperature should be over 32°F.

2) Check Joints

Use a screwdriver to remove older sand that no longer maintains a neat joint.

3) Apply the Sand

Sweep the polymeric sand over your brick pavers and spread it uniformly with a push broom. Ensure that all joints are full of the new sand and that there are no cavities. Sprinkle the sand wherever you find joints that are not full.

4) Remove Excess Sand

Use a leaf blower to remove excess polymeric sand on your pavers, and be cautious not to blow out the sand from the joints. If you do not remove this excess sand properly, it will become wet and stick to the surface.

5) Wet the Joints

Set your hose to shower mode and wet the joints in sections for 30 seconds at a time to get the joints 1 ½” wet. Wetting should be done carefully to prevent running water from carrying off the polymeric sand from the joints.

6) Drying

Allow 48 hours for the sand to dry. Foot traffic is okay during this time but avoid high heels or shoes that may disturb joints. If this is an area where you allow cars, wait 24-48 hours.
